Body Of Knowledge

Explore What You Are Expected to Know and Demonstrate

Every professional certification should be built around clearly defined areas of knowledge and competence.

The IBACTP® Body of Knowledge (BoK) identifies the major domains, concepts, professional practices, competencies, and subject areas associated with an applicable certification.

The Body of Knowledge helps answer:

What should a competent professional holding this certification understand and be capable of applying?

What Is Included in a Body of Knowledge?

Depending on the certification, the BoK may identify:

  • Knowledge domains
  • Competency domains
  • Core concepts
  • Technical principles
  • Professional practices
  • Methods and processes
  • Tools and technologies
  • Governance principles
  • Risk considerations
  • Ethical considerations
  • Relevant standards and frameworks
  • Applied professional competencies
  • Management competencies
  • Emerging technology considerations

Body of Knowledge by Certification Area

IBACTP® Bodies of Knowledge may cover certification areas such as:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Generative AI
  • AI Engineering
  • Machine Learning
  • Data Science
  • Data Analytics
  • Cybersecurity & Defense
  • Cyber Threat Intelligence
  • Security Operations
  • Cloud Security
  • Digital Forensics
  • Infrastructure & Cloud
  • IT Systems & Governance
  • AI Governance
  • Data Governance
  • Technology Risk
  • Digital Transformation
  • Other emerging technology disciplines

Professional-Level Body of Knowledge

Professional-level certifications generally emphasize the ability to:

  1. 1UNDERSTAND
  2. 2APPLY
  3. 3ANALYZE
  4. 4SOLVE
  5. 5DEMONSTRATE

Candidates may be expected to understand concepts, apply methods and tools, analyze information, solve professional problems, and demonstrate role-specific competencies.

Manager-Level Body of Knowledge

Manager-level certifications typically extend beyond technical understanding into governance, management, risk, decision-making, communication, and leadership.

The competency progression may follow:

  1. 1ASSESS
  2. 2PRIORITIZE
  3. 3GOVERN
  4. 4MANAGE
  5. 5OPTIMIZE
  6. 6COMMUNICATE
  7. 7LEAD

Manager-level candidates may therefore encounter domains involving:

  • Strategy
  • Governance
  • Risk management
  • Resource allocation
  • Performance management
  • Stakeholder management
  • Organizational decision-making
  • Leadership
  • Executive communication
  • How to Use the Body of Knowledge

Candidates can use the BoK to structure their preparation:

STEP 1 — REVIEW THE DOMAINS

Understand the major knowledge and competency areas.

STEP 2 — COMPARE WITH YOUR CURRENT SKILLS

Identify areas in which you are already confident.

STEP 3 — IDENTIFY GAPS

Determine which domains require more study.

STEP 4 — STUDY SYSTEMATICALLY

Use your course materials and approved resources to address each domain.

STEP 5 — PRACTICE APPLICATION

Apply concepts through questions, scenarios, cases, labs, or projects.

Sample Questions

Get Familiar with Question Styles, Topics, and Assessment Expectations

Sample questions help candidates become familiar with the general structure and style of an IBACTP® multiple-choice certification examination.

They are intended to support assessment familiarity and preparation—not to reveal actual examination content.

Standard Online Examination Format

Unless otherwise specified for a particular credential, the standard certification examination consists of:

  • 100 MCQs | 90 Minutes | 70% Passing Score | Online

Candidates who do not achieve the required passing score are permitted one new attempt within three months, subject to applicable requirements.

Types of Questions You May Encounter

Sample and certification examination questions may evaluate different levels of understanding.

Knowledge Questions

These evaluate understanding of important terminology, principles, concepts, methods, or frameworks.

Application Questions

These require candidates to determine how to apply a concept in a professional situation.

Scenario-Based Questions

Candidates are presented with a realistic situation and asked to identify the most appropriate response.

Analytical Questions

These assess the ability to interpret information, identify relationships, evaluate alternatives, or determine likely causes and consequences.

Professional Judgment Questions

These require candidates to select the most appropriate action based on professional responsibilities, risk, governance, ethics, or established practices.

Manager-Level Questions

Manager-level examinations may place greater emphasis on:

  • Prioritization
  • Governance
  • Risk
  • Resource decisions
  • Organizational impact
  • Stakeholder management
  • Strategy
  • Leadership decisions

Example Question Style

Scenario:

An organization is implementing an AI system that will influence high-impact business decisions. The project team discovers that the training data may produce materially different outcomes across certain user groups.

What should the responsible professional prioritize before deploying to production?

  • A. Increase model complexity immediately
  • B. Conduct appropriate bias, fairness, risk, and impact evaluation
  • C. Remove human oversight to improve automation
  • D. Expand production access before completing testing

Best Answer: B

The purpose of this type of question is to assess whether the candidate can apply professional principles to a realistic situation, rather than merely recall a definition.

What Sample Questions Are Not

Sample questions:

  • Are not actual certification exam questions
  • Do not guarantee what will appear on an examination
  • Should not be memorized as an alternative to studying
  • Do not represent the entire Body of Knowledge
  • Do not guarantee a passing examination score

Candidates should prepare against the applicable learning outcomes, competency domains, and Body of Knowledge.

Prepare for Competence—not Memorization.
