Certification & Beyond
Certification Decision
How IBACTP® Certification Decisions Are Made
A certification decision is the formal determination that a candidate has satisfied the applicable requirements for an IBACTP® professional credential.
Certification is not awarded solely because an individual registered for a program, received training materials, attended a course, or participated in an instructor-led program.
The certification decision is based on the candidate satisfying the applicable requirements established for the credential.
The Principle Behind Certification
IBACTP® certification is intended to answer an important professional question:
Has the candidate demonstrated the knowledge, skills, competencies, and professional judgment required for the certification being awarded?
Depending on the certification pathway, this determination may be based on an online certification test/exam, a Capstone Project, trainer-assigned assessments, or another approved competency-assessment method.
Self-Paced Certification Decision
For candidates following the Self-Paced pathway, certification decisions are primarily based on successful completion of the applicable online certification examination and satisfaction of any other certification requirements.
Unless otherwise specified for a particular credential, the standard examination consists of:
Requirement

100 MCQs

Examination Access

What May Be Considered Before Certification Is Awarded?
Depending on the credential, certification review may include confirmation of:
Candidate identity and registration information
Applicable eligibility requirements
Successful assessment outcome
Required examination score
Completion of required Capstone Project
Completion of applicable trainer-assigned assessments
Compliance with assessment rules
Compliance with certification policies
Professional or ethical requirements
Resolution of any outstanding certification matters
IBACTP® may request clarification or supporting information where necessary before finalizing a certification decision.
If the Candidate Is Successful
Once successful completion has been confirmed, the candidate proceeds to the credential-award and professional-induction stage.
If the Candidate Does Not Pass the MCQ Exam
A candidate who does not achieve the required 70% passing score may receive one new examination attempt within three months, subject to applicable retake requirements.
Candidates should use the period to review course materials and strengthen weaker competency areas before using the new attempt.
Once the certification decision is completed, the candidate becomes eligible to receive the applicable IBACTP® professional credential and certified-member materials.
The credential package formally recognizes that the individual has satisfied the requirements for the awarded certification.

Certification Reflects Current Competence—not Only Past Achievement
Technology changes rapidly.
Artificial intelligence, cybersecurity threats, cloud architectures, data practices, governance requirements, automation technologies, regulations, and professional standards continue to evolve. For this reason, IBACTP® certification holders are expected to remain professionally engaged and maintain relevant competence throughout their certification cycle.
IBACTP® certifications are valid for three years, subject to applicable maintenance requirements.
Continuing Professional Education (CPE)
Continuing Professional Education helps certified professionals maintain, update, and expand the competencies associated with their credentials. During the three-year certification period, credential holders should participate in qualifying professional-development activities according to the CPE requirements established for their certification.
CPE Activities May Include
Eligible activities may include:
Professional training
Technology courses
Certification-related workshops
Conferences
Seminars
Webinars
Technical training
Management-development programs
Professional research
Relevant academic coursework
Industry presentations
Professional publications
Teaching or training activities
Approved professional service
Structured self-study
Emerging-technology education
Other approved professional-development activities
Specific qualifying activities, documentation requirements, limits, and CPE values should follow the applicable IBACTP® CPE policy.
CPE Should Be Relevant
Professional development should have a reasonable relationship to:
The certification's Body of Knowledge
The credential holder's professional responsibilities
Emerging technologies
Professional practice
Ethics
Risk and governance
Management or leadership, where relevant
Changes affecting the certified discipline
The objective is meaningful continuing competence rather than simply accumulating activities.
Maintain CPE Records
Credential holders should maintain appropriate evidence of completed CPE activities.
Documentation may include:
Completion certificates
Training records
Conference attendance records
Transcripts
Course confirmations
Webinar certificates
Publication information
Presentation records
Other acceptable evidence
IBACTP® may request documentation in accordance with applicable certification-maintenance procedures.
Ongoing Professional Responsibilities
Maintaining certification may also require credential holders to:
Renew Your Credential. Demonstrate Continued Competence. Stay Current.
IBACTP® professional certifications are valid for three years.
Recertification provides a structured process for credential holders to demonstrate continued professional development and maintain active certification status beyond the initial certification period.
Technology professionals should not rely indefinitely on knowledge demonstrated several years earlier. Recertification encourages professionals to remain informed about developments affecting their fields.
Why Recertification Matters
Over a three-year period, significant changes may occur in:
Artificial Intelligence
Generative AI
Cybersecurity
Cyber threats
Cloud technologies
Data science
Data analytics
AI engineering
Regulations
Governance frameworks
Professional standards
Security practices
Technology risk
Digital transformation
Recertification reinforces the principle that an active professional credential should reflect ongoing professional development and current competence.
Preparing for Recertification
Credential holders should not wait until the final weeks of their certification cycle.
Throughout the three-year period, certified professionals should:
Participate in continuing education
Maintain CPE records
Keep professional information current
Review changes within their certification domain
Follow the Code of Ethics
Monitor certification communications
Review renewal requirements before expiration
Recertification Requirements
Depending on the credential and applicable policy, renewal may require:
Completion of required CPE
Submission of CPE records
Confirmation of continued professional activity
Compliance with the Code of Ethics
Updated credential-holder information
Completion of an applicable renewal application
Payment of an applicable recertification fee
Additional competency requirements where required
Other credential-specific requirements
IBACTP® may revise competency requirements as technologies and professional practices evolve.
Recertification Timeline
A typical certification lifecycle follows:
YEAR 1 — DEVELOP
Continue learning and begin documenting qualifying professional-development activities.
YEAR 2 — EXPAND
Strengthen competencies and remain engaged with developments in the profession.
YEAR 3 — REVIEW & RENEW
Confirm CPE, review applicable requirements, and complete recertification before the credential expires.
If a Certification Expires
Credential holders should complete recertification within the applicable timeframe.
If a credential expires, the individual may be required to discontinue representing the credential as currently active until applicable reinstatement or recertification requirements have been satisfied. Additional requirements may apply to expired credentials depending on the length of time since expiration and applicable IBACTP® policy.
